Desert Park Reopens!

Post by Moops » Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:58 pm

After 15 plus years of virtual dormancy, the Desert Park raceway has been reopened by the South Interior Recreational Equine Centre (SIREC). The former home to horse racing is now being spruced up again and the community members are working hard to clear off the cobwebs. Although there may not be full time racing again, there are hopes to house 200 horses, host equestrian training, at least one horse-race, and other special events at Desert Park this year. These events could include a bluegrass festival, an antique car show, an archery competition, and agricultural events. Plans also include space for RVs to park.

There was a feature news broadcast on local TV informing viewers that there are presently thoroughbred racehorses being trained at the track. Many of the breeders and trainers that race the horses at the Edmonton racetrack have brought their horses here to train because the mild weather conditions allow for training to begin earlier. If you enjoy seeing these beautiful animals in action, you just might enjoy "a day at the races"!
