House Prices after OK Mountain park fire

were any of you in Kelowna when the Okanagan mountain park fire 2003 took place? If so does anyone know if it has affected the cost of home insurance in the Upper Mission area? Are there any safeguards in place now, should it happen again?.

Wooden houses, trees and hot dry summers are not something that we have had to deal with in West Sussex, UK. We tend to have old damp stone/brick houses with damp if not distinctly wet summers! :rain :tan

Hello - We are new to Kelowna and have just bought a house that was rebuilt after the fires. Most of the houses on our street were knocked down and sold as lots but a few, like ours, were rebuilt. When we purchased house insurance, there did not seem to have any clauses about where the house is - just that it had to be within a certain distance from fire hydrants. Inssurance of any kind here is comparitively very expensive so I was shocked at the price ($800.year) Alex

Hi Lynn - That also covers contents. We used to pay £112/year for household and £120/year auto in the Isle of Man so this is all a bit whocking to us. My car costs $1800/year to insure here with 40% no claims discount. Anyway it is all worth it - a small price to pay to be here. Alex

Well it was on the Isle of Man - no one could make-off with a car easily there. I was driving a 2005 fiesta zetec and that was fully comp insurance. I never had to lock it and it was kept on the street. Actually - one morning I got in and could smell that someone had been smoking in the car - I then realized that the passenger seat was in recline. Someone had jumped in for a fag and a nap on a cold night - nothing taken or disturbed. I guess this insurance here is not so bad after all - I was just lucky for a while. Alex

The house insurance seems much the same as we are paying in the UK. The car insurance is quite a bit more. It all seems t balance out in the end, some things are cheaper and some more expensive. :thumbup :thumbdown

No it hasnt affected the house insurance in the Upper Mission... mainly because the risk of wild fire has now gone (for at least 50 years anyway) We pay $1000 per year for building and contents...
