Please can anyone tell me what IT jobs are like in Okanagan?
Is there plenty of IT opportunities?
We will be hopefully coming over to BC this year and we are looking at Okanagan as a place to settle!
Thanks wobblyknee

You're right cbeebie, IT is a hugh field. I've been working in IT for a long time now with lots of experience at different levels and in different areas.
The area of expertise I currently focus on is the "Business Objects" tools for Business Intelligence solutions. This either means absolutely nothing to you or you'll know what I'm talking about!
I'd look for opportunities in this area fist.

I know Business Objects/Crystal Reports well. Helps reduce the use of SQL, but I believe that knowledge of the database structure you are 'interrogating' is still crucial. Not sure on the employment front with that one - will keep a look out whilst I am browsing though.

Just by coincidence, I was invited to the Ostec awards dinner last night. If you haven't checked out their website, you should - there is so much happening in science and IT in the valley - it's amazing!
A children's website called Club Penquin here in the valley was just bought this year, by Disney! As part of the deal the company insists they have to stay in the valley. They now have over 100 employees and are moving into brand new premises. It's a real success story.
There's lots of opportunities for scientists as well, the Government is investing heavily in small sci/tech businesses and they're crying out for engineers, or engineering students.

Yup, it's a very different picture in the Technology field in the Okanagan (over the last 5-6 years) ... as a lot of office related people I used to talk to back when, used to ask "What is IT?"

Hi Wobblyknee,
Only just seen your post and mentioning Business Objects. If you're still looking for work in this field, PM me as I work for Interior Health in their Information Development section (I'm a data warehouse architect) and work with Business Objects XIR2. I believe they are still looking for people to join our team, preferably with Bus Obj experience.

Re: IT Jobs
Hi guys, just thought i'd wake up this old thread rather than start another one.
are there any specific local agencies that are good for IT work in the okanagan ?? just standard admin stuff: windows, novell (honest, its still out there if you look hard enough !), a little bit of linux. i'm keeping an eye on the ostec site as well as monster, workopolis etc. but if there are local agencies that I should be speaking to then I want to make sure i'm on their radar.
cheers
