how remote is Salmon Arm?
1st August 2006 08:36
I am looking at a job opportunity on the South end of Salmon Arm.
Does anyone know what life would be like there. Would one want to live in Vernon perhaps to have a mall, French Immersion school, musik lessons for the kids, ethnic restaurants ......
I am assuming Kelowna is definitely too far for a commute.

Hey there sir mhhp!
Don't know too much about the community in Salmon Arm, as we only stayed there a couple of times overnight. It is a very small town (especially by Canada standards in my opinion)
I'm not sure on the exact mileage, but I would say it's a long drive, as far as commuting is concerned.

I haven't driven to Salmon Arm in awhile, but I think that it would be about an hour from Vernon (maybe a little more). Add at least a half an hour from Kelowna.

Salmon Arm has a thriving cultural undercurrent, I am constantly amazed at the quality and quantity of talent that finds its way through that town. Like a lot of 'smaller' towns in the region Salmon Arm has experienced a boom over the last few years. Shopping and service opportunities abound. It is becoming a commercial hub for its area.

As Siv' said, we spent a few nights in Salmon Arm and enjoyed a relaxing stay. It's the largest community in the Shuswap area and is situated on the southern tip of Shuswap Lake. The population is approximately 16 - 17,000 people. It has close access to Vernon (about 40 miles), Sicamous on the east side of the lake (where the lake junctions with Mara Lake) and surrounding small communities the the west of Salmon Arm.
The community of Salmon Arm built a wharf that is reputed to be the longest in North America. Surrounding the wharf area is a bird sanctuary - so not uncommon to see cranes, etc. at the waterfront. Very nice for a stroll.
You might find more information on it through a Google search of the Shuswap Lake area.
